This chapter showcases one possible way of analysing, from a critical discourse analysis, a number of official texts and documents that were informing the language practices of two distinct groups of migrants in two distinct European nation-states in the early 21st century: Portuguese migrants in the UK and speakers of Slavic languages in Portugal. The chapter is situated in a past period of contemporary European history, yet it illustrates one way of exploring ways in which official language policies mediate the possible spaces of socialization of those that are only partially recognized as citizens in the dominant societies of Portugal and the UK.
